FLAKY RED CURRANT CHEVRE SCONES WITH BLACK PEPPER AND CARDAMOMFLAKY RED CURRANT CHEVRE SCONES WITH BLACK PEPPER AND CARDAMOMWhen I first laid eyes on these red currants at the farmers market, their crimson skins gleaming like tiny rubies, I knew I had to have them. Though often used to make curds or preserves, I prefer to use them in baking, like these Flaky Red Currant and Chevre Scones, allowing their tartness to shine and mellow out the butter and sugar. These scones are perfectly balanced with a flaky, buttery pastry, creamy and tangy chevre strewn throughout, tart currants and spicy black pepper.  The addition of ground cardamom adds a warm sweetness that won’t stand out immediately, but I feel would be lacking without it. Snach up the last of the red currants at the market and toss them into something sweet – you won’t be disappointed! …

apple and blackberry crumble Summer is fading, but fall is sneaking up quite quickly.  Did we even have a summer? It didn’t feel like it. That’s okay though. I like fall. Cozy sweaters, warm cups of soup, apple picking, and best of all? Comfort food.
When chillier days hit I like more comforting, hearty dishes. And when I’m craving something sweet and super easy to do, I choose crumbles. Plus, they are great for getting rid of any left over fruit you have kicking around in the fridge….

Vegan cinnamon buns with dark chocolate and figs just sounds like fall, right? The season was on my mind in a heavy way when I was working on this recipe. All those notions of nesting and cranking the oven at every opportunity. The arrival of ripe figs marks the beginning of the end as far as summer’s concerned. There’s the juicy sweetness that speaks to sunny days. But that underlying deep, wine-y note really gets me excited for the cozy months ahead….
